Wiring is an open source programming environment and electronics i/o board for exploring the electronic arts, tangible media, teaching and learning computer programming and prototyping with electronics. It illustrates the concept of programming with electronics and the physical realm of hardware control which are necessary to explore physical interaction design and tangible media aspects.

Wiring is an open project initiated by Hernando Barragán (Universidad de Los Andes | Architecture and Design School). Wiring started at the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea in Italy and it is currently developed at the Universidad de Los Andes in Colombia.

Wiring builds on Processing, an open project initiated by Ben Fry (Broad Institute) and Casey Reas (UCLA Design | Media Arts). Processing evolved from ideas explored in the Aesthetics and Computation Group at the MIT Media Lab.

Bjoern Hartman develop WIRING_OSC a Firmware library to send OSC messages from a Wiring to a PC and to receive OSC messages sent from the PC, just load the http://protolab.pbwiki.com/f/wiring_osc_0004.pde file in the Wiring editor and then upload into the Wiring hardware. Use this library with Wiring release 0018. Added to the libraries.

08 December 2008
Wiring 0018 released.

20 November 2008
Christoph Wartmann and Etienne Ribeiro develop WiringLib for Processing, added to the libraries. The library is in an early stage but is already usefull for small applications in Processing. Interface sensors and motors without the need to programm it in wiring, directly in Processing or JAVA!

04 October 2008
Wiring 0017 released.

13 September 2008
New GPS NMEA library by Marteen Lamers added to the libraries.

17 June 2008
New project from Rui P.G. Pereira added to the exhibition.

17 June 2008
New project from 02L > Outside Standing Level added to the exhibition.

12 March 2008
The WiringMini and Wiring USBAdapter hardware started shipping.

7 March 2008
New project from Vanessa Carpenter, Mads Høbye, Daniel Brynolf, Jonas Eriksson and Nicolas Padfield added to the exhibition.

7 March 2008
New project from Adi navwany, Michal shamsian, Itamar paloge and Danielle ram added to the exhibition.

23 February 2008
New Wiring hardware. WiringMini and the Wiring USBAdapter have been released, check the Hardware section for more information. As the Wiring I/O board the WiringMini is based on the powerful ATMEL atmega128 microcontroller, having the same power and capabilities on a very small footprint.
