Nothing urgent, just curious:

If I do

Serial.begin(9600);            //sets baud rate for port

Garbage characters apear if I don't wait a bit before trying to send to it,
and even if I do wait, there's at least one junk character.

  delay(5000);                   // takes a little bit to be ready ?
  Serial.println(" ");
  Serial.println("Ready");

Just wondering how I'd avoid that..

Whenever you start the board (right after reset) the bootloader gets control waiting for about 7-8 seconds for a new program to be uploaded, if you send data from an application during this 7 seconds window then the board will attempt to start a new program upload procedure. I am not sure if this is your case, it might be.
