OK, I'm getting closer..  first mistake, I was using Processing, not Wiring.. duh!

So I tried this, modifying the pin to 48 for the diagnostic and making the delay longer.

When I upload it, it tells me I need to reset the board.. and yes, once I figured out where that button is, the darn thing works...

I bought this after reading "Making things talk"..  way back in the 70's I built a few HeathKits but when microcomputers came along  I went into that and forgot all about this stuff.. and missed a whole revolution.. 

This is going to be a lot of fun..  thank you again and I'm sure I'll be back with more questions after I get done poking around more..
