OK, I'm getting closer..  first mistake, I was using Processing, not Wiring.. duh!

So I tried this, modifying the pin to 48 for the diagnostic and making the delay longer.

When I upload it, it tells me I need to reset the board.. and yes, once I figured out where that button is, the darn thing works...

Thanks Smiley

I bought this after reading "Making things talk"..  way back in the 70's I built a few HeathKits but when microcomputers came along  I went into that and forgot all about this stuff.. and missed a whole revolution..

This is going to be a lot of fun..  thank you again and I'm sure I'll be back with more questions after I get done poking around more..

// Blinking LED
// by BARRAGAN <http://barraganstudio.com>

// turns on and off light (LED) connected to a digital pin, with
// intervals of 1 second (1000 milliseconds)
// Note in the circuit the LED it has a positive (long leg) and a ground
// (short leg), if the LED doesn't turn ON, it might be it is inverted.

// Created 2 December 2003
// Revised 1 May 2007

int ledPin = 48;           // LED connected to the Wiring I/O board pin 0

void setup()
  pinMode(ledPin, OUTPUT); // sets the digital pin as output

void loop()
  digitalWrite(ledPin, HIGH);   // sets the LED on
  delay(5000);                  // waits for a second
  digitalWrite(ledPin, LOW);    // sets the LED off
