Here's a cute little ATMega 128 board:

This one has a two-line display, five pushbuttons, an LED, a buzzer, and a relay that can switch 10 amps at 120VAC.  Plus all the other pins come out on connectors. Costs $54. So you can do some stuff with it without attaching any external components.

Has a DB9 RS-232 connector rather than a USB connector, though.

Can that be used with the Wiring software?

yes, the only thing to take care of is mapping the right pin numbering in your projects, you can check out the schematics here: http://wiring.org.co/ioboard/index.html#110
Also you'll need the bootloader, drop me an e-mail to hbarragan[at]uniandes.edu.co and I'll send you back the file.

I would like to ask You about using USBkey from Atmel. Inside is also ATmega128, but with build in USB port (ATmega1287 for clarity).
USBkey:
http://atmel.com/dyn/products/tools_card.asp?family_id=655&family_name=USB+Contr...
ATmega1287:
http://atmel.com/dyn/products/product_card.asp?part_id=3875

Question is about bootloading projects. Atmel was preinstalled, on board bootloader for use a FLIP software for loading projects.
FLIP 3:
http://atmel.com/dyn/products/tools_card.asp?tool_id=3886

USBkey as a board is not visible for user like "something beside USB-RS232 converter (FTDI)".

I hope it will have similar usability as regular ATmega128 Wiring board.

Yes Wiring also has a bootloader on it, on the PC side the Wiring board appears as a serial port to the computer (macosx, windows or linux).

So, it means there are two ways:

1. Change botloader on USBkey board to be wisible for Wiring (as seriall port?). On the Atmel's site http://atmel.com/products/avr/usb/ we can find an application "AVR272: USB CDC Demonstration UART to USB Bridge".
2. Adapt Wiring to bootload code like FLIP (which is now Java based) software.

It will be worth to try, because USBkey costs around 30$
