Title: Wiring mini reset on current surge
Post by mga on 12/01/10 at 20:45:22
Hi

I have a Wiring Mini connected as displayed in the second image of step 2 here:

http://wiring.org.co/learning/tutorials/wiringmini/index.html

... with the difference that I am not using the USB while running (I use the USB to upload the code and then remove it replacing it with a 12V power outlet as indicated in the image). I have a set of 2 motors controlled with an H-Bridge connected. The power source of these motors goes directly from the 12V (pin 8 in the standard H-Bridge).

The problem I am having is this: whenever the motors get enabled the Mini board gets reset. This did not happen with the Wiring full size board. I am thinking that this current surge may be to account for that. How can I avoid this? Is it a matter of wiring as in diagram #3? What else could it be?

Thanks

- mga

the Mini should be getting the 12 on the VIN pin, what happens after the board is reseted? does it restart again?

It restarts yes. The motors move for a moment but since the board is reset they stop (well everything stops, right now I have motors, switches and an LED matrix only). The schematic is this:

Where it says 9V should be 12V since it is a power outlet. I will use a 9V battery but don't want to waste it during testing. The Mini receives 12V in VIN and 5V go down back to the circuit via VCC. The H-Bridge has a direct connection to the battery (outlet) in pin 8 and a connection to Wiring's VCC in pin 16.

you mention "The H-Bridge has a direct connection to the battery (outlet) in pin 8 and a connection to Wiring's VCC in pin 16." what does this means vcc on pin 16?
You are using pin 16 as OUTPUT pinMode(16, OUTPUT); and then digitalWrite(16, HIGH); to feed 5V to something connected to this pin?

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I was talking about the H-Bridge's pin 16 (it has 16 pins). After talking to a few people it seems part of the problem is me using a 9V battery. Turns out it's better to use 4 AA batteries. Do you agree?

seems to be the right path, not use 9v batteries but a pack of rechargeable AA's.
